Ngā Tōtara Dojo

Eskrima, also known as Kali or Arnis, is the national martial art of the Phillipines. The three terms are roughly interchangeable umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines ("Filipino Martial Arts", or FMA), which emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons, as well as "open hand" techniques without weapons.. The school system taught at the Academy is from DiamondBack Eskrima.

 

DiamondBack as a system is always changing and always being improved. Classes at the Academy are taught by Grant Jackson. Grant is a Junior Black Belt Instructor and has been studying Eskrima since 2004.

 

Our weapon work covers stick, sword, knife/dagger, double stick, double sword, stick and dagger, sword and dagger, pole and flexible weapons. This is taught integrated with our empty hand systems Pangamut (boxing), Sikaran (kicking) and Dumog (Wrestling)..
